Obviously this does not work with my workflow of culling and rating with FRV.
with FRV, PSU is perfectly happy and properly reads back metadata even though it was edited by FRV.
I know the XMP files don't take up much space, but something isn't right and it worries me that it may affect the integrity of my metadata.įor clarification and for the benefit of others reading this thread, I would like to update what I have found.
Has anyone seen this type of behavior in XMP files before? I'm not sure how to clean it up or fix it. I add metadata and sync, and now the same thing is happening! I'm a bit surprised to see this as I thought it for sure was the DPP ratings that were causing it. Using the same import profile but this time direct to PSU (not using DPP *** EDIT: FRV *** first). Proceeded to re-import the original files directly from my CF card. Compacted the catalog and thumbnail database. So I deleted the 5 offending files from PSu (from the catalog and disk). Apparently I didn't have enough coffee, when I wrote that. The software is actually Fast Raw Viewer (FRV). So, I can understand some mixup in the XMP metadata upon initial import to PSu. Normally, the XMP is updated/overwritten.Īfter a bit of investigation I remembered that these 5 particular files I had rated in Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4 ( I sometimes cull in DPP prior to importing to PS). Didn't end up being my path but maybe there's some food for thought and experimentation in that for you.Every time I go back and modify metadata and re-sync, a new XMP with updated timestamp (in the filename) is created, so there are multiple XMPs for a single raw file. By deleting from FRV and not from another program I ensured that I wasn't left with any orphaned files. For a short time while trying things I used to keep FastRawViewer open in the background, using it pretty much only to delete images that I decided to further cull as I went about my business. Probably as you are asking the question you don't want to ditch all the jpgs, and that is of course totally valid.
At that stage the jpgs have done their job for me and I simply delete the lot. I'm still shooting raw + jpg because it gives me greater zoom on playback in camera, it's also kind of nice to have the jpg alongside while culling with FastRawViewer - the raw rendering is kind of agricultural. (.as well as access Bleach Bypass which is my favourite and not in camera for me.). Capture One doing such a good job presenting the raw edited to look like the jpg straight off the bat, with the added bonus of being able to switch film sim so easily and/or apply any number of possible changes as desired. Since shifting over to Capture One 21 recently I don't really see the need for jpgs anymore at all. This worked out quite well as RawTherapee and FastStone both have raw/jpg inclusion selectable.
Organisation was simply the windows file system. Until recently I then edited raws in RawTherapee and used FastStone Image Viewer for comparisons and viewing. I then rename using Advanced Renamer which also handles the file pairs together. I cull off the card in FastRawViewer then drop the keepers into a dated folder.
